Anyone remember Myspace? It's funny what a random reachout can do. Close to 15 years ago, a friend in Melbourne demanded I come along to witness a phenomenal violinist, playing at a pub in Fitzroy. Her name was Xani Kolac, and just minutes in, transfixed at the ethereal soundscapes being produced by this wunderkind with her loop-pedal, I knew I was watching one of the very best musical experiences in our city - and have encouraged other friends to see her if they get the opportunity ever since.
I immediately messaged her on Myspace after the show, asking to collaborate on whatever she was cooking: and so for over a decade i've had the distinct joy and pleasure of directing music videos for her and her bands (for example, The Twoks), as well as photographing her press and other concepts along the way, and, her wedding, to the fabulous and equally talented musician Cris. What a great reminder to get out, get inspired, and just, ask.
Here's a recent portrait of Xani, as well as below it, a few music videos we made on shoestring budgets and skeleton staff: where all the fun stuff is made. Look closely, and you might even see us accidentally setting fire to her hair...
